How FCA Affordability Checks Work for Bad Credit and Short-Term Borrowing

A loan you repaid in full, on time, every month, can still have been unaffordable. That sounds like a contradiction until you read the actual definition the regulator uses.

The rules don’t ask only whether you paid; they ask whether you could manage the repayments sustainably. A lender therefore looks at your income, regular expenses, and overall financial commitments when assessing affordability. This applies across the short-term credit market, including applications for a bad credit payday loan, where the lender considers the applicant’s individual financial circumstances before making a decision.

    What “sustainable” actually means

Three conditions have to hold. A repayment is sustainable if you can make it:

    • Without having to borrow further to cover it
    • While still meeting your other reasonable commitments and essential living costs
    • Without significant adverse consequences for your wider financial situation

That third one does a lot of work. The FCA’s creditworthiness rules frame affordability as a risk to you, not just a risk to the lender. A firm has a commercial reason to check whether it gets its money back. The rule exists because affordability should also take account of whether the proposed repayment fits comfortably within the borrower’s wider financial position.

    There is no fixed checklist

People assume affordability assessment means a standard form every lender runs. It doesn’t work that way, and the Financial Ombudsman Service has been explicit that there’s never been a set list of checks firms have to complete.

What the rules require instead is proportionality. The check should scale with the risk. Small sum, short term, stable income, no history with that lender? A lighter assessment can be reasonable. The picture changes as the risk climbs.

This means an affordability assessment is not necessarily identical for every applicant. Lenders can consider the amount requested, the proposed repayment schedule, and the information available about the applicant when deciding how detailed the assessment needs to be.

What makes a check go deeper

The factors that push a lender toward closer scrutiny are fairly predictable:

    • A larger amount relative to your income
    • A longer term, since more can change over twelve months than over one
    • Higher cost, because expensive credit leaves less room for error
    • Your borrowing history, particularly repeat applications
    • Signs of vulnerability, including recent bereavement, known health issues or visible financial distress

So two people can apply for the same product on the same day and face genuinely different levels of questioning. That doesn’t necessarily indicate inconsistent treatment; it can reflect the requirement for lenders to assess affordability according to the circumstances of the individual application.

Why your word alone isn’t enough

Here’s a detail that catches applicants out. FCA guidance says it’s generally not sufficient for a lender to rely only on what you state about your income and outgoings.

That’s why bank statements, payslips or an open banking connection turn up in the process. The lender is required to form its own reasonable view of your finances, and a declared figure typed into a form doesn’t meet that standard by itself. It has little to do with whether you personally seem trustworthy.

There’s a related rule worth knowing: a firm mustn’t encourage you to borrow more than you asked for if the larger amount wouldn’t be sustainable. If you request £200 and get offered £500, that offer has to clear the same test.

    Repeat borrowing changes the calculation

Short-term credit is designed for a temporary gap. The rules say so directly, and lenders have to explain that these products are unsuitable for sustained borrowing over long periods.

Which is why a pattern of repaying and immediately reborrowing carries so much weight. A firm can’t encourage refinancing if the result would leave your commitments unsustainable. If your history shows loan after loan, the affordability picture gets worse each time, not better, whatever your repayment record looks like.

From the perspective of the applicant, this means that it is important to think about the goal of the loan and the repayment plan and see how well they fit into the other obligations. It can also be useful to have a good understanding of your budget.

    What to have ready

Preparation can shorten the process and give the lender the information it needs to assess your application:

    • Three months of bank statements, or willingness to share data securely
    • Proof of income, especially if it varies
    • An honest figure for your monthly essentials rather than an optimistic one
    • The sum needed, not the maximal amount possible

Accuracy in providing the required information is also crucial. This information can be cross-checked with verified information, which is why it is important that your income and expenditure numbers are realistic enough to reflect your actual affordability situation.

The check is about responsible borrowing

The affordability test is designed to ensure that credit is considered in the context of a borrower’s wider financial circumstances. Anyone researching a bad credit payday loan can benefit from understanding what “sustainable” means under the rules, because approval depends on more than simply having a particular credit score or previous repayment history.

It is important to calculate your monthly income, expenses, and other obligations before applying. You will be able to see if the repayment will fit into your budget easily.
